The Republicans are so obsessed with deficit reduction that they plan to vote today to slash funding for the WIC nutrition program for low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and young children. The cuts will be the largest ever and will force the program to turn away 200,000 to 350,000 eligible low-income women and children next year.
Republicans justify these cuts saying that WIC's administrative costs are too high. Well, take a look at this chart prepared by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. See the yellow line at the bottom. That's WIC's administrative costs. It's 6%. Too much. I don't think so.
Republicans don't care if kids go hungry or are starved in the womb. I hope that makes you mad. It should.
